Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best Bird Song, Franklin's Tower, and Scarlet???

Hi Heads-

I'm a long time listener of the dead and Etree/Archive.org. Anyway, I would love to hear thoughts on what folks think are the best versions of Bird Song, Franklin's Tower, and Scarlet Begonias>FOTM?

At this moment, I dig these versions (I stress the words: "At this moment")....
1. Scarlet-Fire:
5/8/77
2/5/78
12/31/78

2. Bird Song
8/27/72
?

3. Franklin's Tower
6/17/75
?

Re. Bird Song- the most mind-blowing one I've ever heard is the one from Hampton, 3-21-86. Listen to it all the way through- the jamming later on in it is absolutely sick- I'd never heard them take it quite that way before. It will blow your mind if you're into the extreme energy level and improvisation there...

All in all, the first set of that show was amazing- the opening Roadrunner, the Birdsong, the Supplication, etc. VERY intense.

Check it out and tell me what you think!

spaced..a few, i think the dates are right

Bird Song- 12/31/90, 4/28/91
Franklins Tower- 2/26/77, 4/23/77, 10/31/91
Scarlet/Fire- 11/1/79 and i forget....

i like the 90's Bird Songs with Branford's jazz take and then Carlos Santana jamming along, imo Jerry played and interacted so well with them

No discussion of scarlet fire can pass me by without mentioning one of the greatest underdog scarlet fire performances- 7-7-89

Scarlet / Fire
9/2/78 - Giants Stadium "Dick's alltime favorite" - The bridge jam has no letup
6/18/83 - Saratoga - burns

Franklin's
9/28/75 - Golden Gate Park - Raw Power
Many 77 great versions

Bird Song
3-7-81 "Cole Field House" Birdsong. Longest (17+ minutes) and most interesting birdsong on the map

I also love the versions with Branford as well as the 80's acoustic versions. Also interesting is 6/28/85 Hershey Birdsong > Comes a Time in the first set!!
